Welcome
R: Hello folks and welcome to episode 3 of season 2 of RegenEarth! This is the podcast of the RegenEarth online conferences. Hello Jon and welcome to the show!
J: Hello one and all.
R: Ok, Jon. We’ve dealt with backyard veggies in our two previous shows. This week the question is: What are the easiest herbs to grow? Care to have a go at this one?
J: The key, I think, is to look at your eating habits. What herbs are you using now?
R: So, a sort of import replacement for the household.
J: Indeed. I’d also have a discussion with other family members and maybe do a few test meals with new herbs just to see how they go down at the table.
R: Remembering, of course, nothing tastes as good as your own homegrown herbs or anything else for that matter.
Cool Climate Options
J: So to give our listeners something to grasp, what herbs do you grow Rich? And perhaps why?
R: We grow those herbs that thrive in a cool climate Jon. So those are parsley, rosemary, thyme and mint. We’ve tried growing basil but with no luck thus far. We use all three in cooking though Carol insists on Italian parsley.
J: Is that the Lebanese upbringing?
R: *laughs* Correct Jon. How about yourself Jon? What herbs do you grow?
J: Well we have a selection from perennial to annual with some perennials grown as annuals. Sage, Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme are the perennials. Tarragon is a perennial but not overly frost hardy so we’ve replaced that this growing season. It’s in a more sheltered position so it might grow through. Then we have Dill, Coriander, mints of a few types, in pots!
R: Mint, if not contained, can be a problem. Is that right Jon?
J: Can be.
R: We’ve always maintained that our regen backyard method is applicable to any setting. Even those without a backyard! So Jon, what herbs would suit a family or person living in a flat with only a small balcony or window box in which to grow?
J:
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Basil
R: And, as Jon says, there’s nothing quite like veggies and herbs you’ve grown yourself.
J: And that’s it for another episode of Regen Earth. All the links are in the show notes.
R: Hope you got something out of the show. We’ve enjoyed bringing it to you. OK. Bye until next week when we’ll be ….
J: Thanks for listening!
